On a recent trip to Detroit, we stopped at the legendary Pewabic Pottery. In the heart of Detroit, where now sadly, the shiniest, brightest buildings are the three new casinos, Pewabic pottery remains an icon in the city. Mary Chase Stratton started the pottery studio in the early 1900’s (when the arts & crafts movement was sweeping the country) and it grew to be a successful studio, still today many homes on the east side of Detroit have Pewabic’s tiles, most commonly around the fireplace. Iconic Detroit buildings, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, many churches across the country and even the Tiger’s new stadium (Comerica Park...RIP Tiger Stadium) all showcase Pewabic artwork.
I bought a few tiles and hug them (relatively straight) last weekend, they are pictured above.
